About us
GreenSeat allows you to make your trip greener. By offsetting the CO2-emissions of your travels you give households in developing countries access to sustainable energy. This reduces global CO2 emissions, while it improves the livingstandards of local families.
History
GreenSeat was founded by Niels Korthals Altes. At the time, Niels’ job with a large Dutch multinational required him to travel the world. But he didn’t feel right flying all the time. He found out about the impact of air travel – his many flights each year made his total CO2 footprint many times greater than the average for someone living in the Netherlands. There must be another way, he thought. As he looked for greener travel options, it quickly became clear that there are still very few sustainable alternatives, such as planes powered by solar panels, hydrogen cars and buses, and trains using green power. Unfortunately, the alternatives that the airlines are working on (thankfully, they are working on alternatives!) will not be ready for use for many years. He discovered the COOL Flying project, set up in 2002 by Multatuli Travel and Business for Climate. Niels offered his time to the project and gave it its current name. GreenSeat was born.
The organisation
Over the years, GreenSeat has grown and is now part of Climate Neutral Group. Now you can also go to GreenSeat to find out which means of transportation produces the least emissions and, of course, to offset your journey. Climate Neutral Group is a member of ICROA (The International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance).
